History of the "Krewe":
The ShoeKrewe was founde in 1989 by Captain Don"the Badger" Perryman and Paul "Coz" Boruff and had its infancy founded in the San Marcos River Cleanup. That year the coveted "most shoes" award was not taken, in fact at the time the "ShoeKrewe" name did not exist.
In 1990 the 2 founders recovered 35 shoes to claim said prize. The plaque was duplicated and both founders still hold that original award. This is the origin of the now infamous "ShoeKrewe" title heralded in the hill country and across Texas today.
From 1990 to 1993 Perryman & Boruff shouldered the responsibility of taking the award for the benefit of future generations of Krewe members. It was a grueling, solitary and yes, unselfish act of labor that developed the Krewe into what it has become today.
In 1994 two more core members were drafted into the "Krewe Circle of Light". Mark "Pegasus" Bell and Dave "Shark" Mandt have been steadfast in their participation, enthusiasum and voice of the things we hold dear, no matter how subverted.
In 1997 there was a surge in membership due to our suave popularity. The first females participated actively with the Krewe...k... Also brought into the fold were individuals including, but not limited to: Tony Bryant, Clark "TA" Patterson, Rusty "Doc", and the dude Mark brought several times!!!?
It should also be more than a footnote that an individual, Tom "the Roach" Roach has been a hired mercinary for many years since inception. Without his support, the Krewe would have had much narrower margins in securing the awards. Until its dissolution in 1996, The "Most Jewelry" plaque was shared by Roach & Coz.
In 2006, for entirely political reasons, The City of San Marcos would not allow the Cleanup to take place. The original founder of the event, Mr. Don Dibble of the Dive Shop was apparently shunned by the governing body for apparent gain of their own. Dibble created and sponsored the event for decades and was truly a "steward" of the river.
In 2007 The City of San Marcos sponsored the event after turning it toward their favor. The turnout, as we hear, was extremely poor without many plaques, sponsors or attendance. The "Krewe"
boycotted the event this year out of respect for the event's true founder... Don Dibble.
All of the above mentioned individuals form the cornerstone of the illustrious, long lived ShoeKrewe!!
Fairness of play, Beer, equity, Beer, honor, Beer, dedication, BEER and, oh yeah, a little nite dive at strategic times have become the guiding principles of these rare icons.
